Yesudas was born on January 10, 1940, into a Roman Catholic (Latin Reith) family in Fort Kochi, the son of Augustine Joseph Bhagavathar and Elizabeth, the famous musician and playwright of the time. Yesudas was the second of seven children of the Augustine Joseph-Elizabeth couple and the eldest of the sons.
He had an older sister, Pushpa, and a younger brother, Antappan, Babu, Mani and Justin, and a younger sister, Jayamma. Of these, Pushpa and Babu died of fever at an early age. Justin’s younger brother died in February 2020 in Kochi under mysterious circumstances
It was his father who introduced Yesudas to pure music in a community that was not very fond of classical music and Carnatic music. Augustine Joseph, who devoted his life to art, worked hard to support his family. Yesudas himself has often spoken of the sufferings he endured as a child. In the midst of all this suffering, Augustine Joseph was working to nurture his son’s musical taste.
Yesudas, who meditated on the lessons his father had taught him, performed his first concert in 1949 at the age of nine. With that, the natives started describing Kochu Dasappan as Bhagavathar like his father. People started pampering the boy as Dasappan Bhagavathar and Kattassery Kochu Bhagavathar

Yesudas, who took part in a sound test conducted by All India Radio after passing the Gana Bhushanam, has a history of failing there. The singer studied classical music under Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, a hair-raising man in Carnatic music. This continued until Chembai’s death in 1974.
